Hi
i have encountered something strange in xp-pro. "suddenly" my p2pnet did not
work for the pc running xp-pro. i replaced disk and made a clean install. in
this install that sees my network + router (adsl).
"ipconfig" tells the ip-adress is 192.168.2.36
the DNS suffix is OAsen LAN

on the faulty one "ipconfig" says the IP-adress for automatic conf is set to
169.254.105.186
there is no DNS suffix

have removed the nic, booted to telle system theres no nic
and put it back in a different slot, still same behaviour, and somehow xp
keeps count of the number of "lans" i have created

have tried system restore, but this did not change situation

anyone help?

Palle

The reason your IP address has changed from 198.whatever to 169.whatever is
because the computer is no longer able to obtain a valid address from the
router. That could be due to a faulty NIC, bad cable, connecting to the
wrong port on the router, or a problem with the router itself.

Hi Richard
thank you for your prompt reply. i checked nic, cables, got a new cable,
choose a new port. no improvement

what makes me curios is that when i take a new disk a clean new xp install
it all works, but on the ols system its stubborn.
have also tried ipconfig/renew but get some error on old system.

i have the notion that in registry there sits some old values for ip....
that are "stuck"!

am i wrong?

if i cant make it work as before i see no other solution than re installing
everything and that will take me a week.
its a huge sytsem

Have you tried a different NIC? Yours may look fine and Windows may think
it's fine but it may not be.

No I have not tried a different NIC, none in my stock, but can you give any
hint on the change in IP i mentioned? seems to me that if I can just reset
it to original, it should work. cannot grasp how a nic that works on a clean
install should misbehave...

great that you answer
