Changing installation drive letters

I've been searching through this site however have not found a solution to my
problem. I am attempting a clean install of Windows XP onto a SATA drive
system. The primary drive is partitioned into 2 drives, the second is
currently being used to backup the windows information so deleting the other
partitiion is not a solution for me. The installation program has seen fit
to assign the letter C to the backup partition and now I can't get it to
change that to what should be the system partition. Does anyone have any
suggestions on this?

Re-post for clarity using only the terms "hard disk drive" and "partition".
The word "drive" can mean anything.

How many hard disk drives do you have. Are they all SATA?
What do you mean by "primary drive"? What is a "SATA drive system"?

Apologies for the lack of clarity, was writing this in a hurry. Currently
the system has a SATA 250 gb hard drive that is partitioned into 2 parts.
the 40gb partition is the portion set aside for the OS, the 200gb partition
is set aside for backup and storage. I can't lose the backup and storage
partition, but the installation reads the 200gb partition as the logical C
drive, though I can install the OS on there, it is somewhat of a huge pain to
have to move everything around. The reason for the reinstall is that I
installed a program that jacked up the OS, freeware that was not the best
decision of my day. Hopefully this clarifies what is happening.

The reason it makes the 200GB partition C: is because this is the active
partition. You can change this with a DOS bootdisk, and FDISK.

BTW it is vital that the partition you install Windows to IS the active
partition at that time, or you will end-up with serious problems.

RMB (Right Mouse Button) on "My Computer" and select "Manage"

Under "Manage", select "Disk Management"

See of that tool will help.
It's almost equivalent to Partition Magic
