Changing Forest Root domain

T

Tim Nichols

Hello all-

In our network I have two domain trees. The first we'll call treeA.com and
the second treeB.com. TreeA was our first domain tree and our first and
only domain, therefore it is our forest root domain. TreeB is our new
domain tree and has two child domains, both contain all users, computers,
servers...anything that we are currently using. TreeA is no longer in use
but we still have the DC running because it is the root of the forest.

I would like to make TreeB our forest root domain and then remove TreeA
altogether, but I am not sure what the proper steps are to accomplish this.
Can anyone point me to some documentation on the web or maybe tell me the
steps in a reply post? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

From the windows server 2003 Domain Rename guide:

In a Windows Server 2003 forest, you cannot:

· Change which domain is the forest root domain. Changing the DNS or
the NetBIOS name of the forest root domain, or both, is supported.

You will have to continue to have a Domain Controller in the Root domain, If
you would like this to be otherwise, then you will probably have to create a
new forest root domain and use ADMT to migrate from you're child domain to
your new forest root

Is this situation any different for a Windows 2000 Server forest? We have
some domain controllers running Windows 2000 Server and some running Windows
Server 2003. Our forest root domain has one domain controller running
Windows 2000.
