how can i change my font without getting text boxes?

I do ctrl a and select all then go tot the font dialogue box , select arial
and all fonts change to boxes

Sounds like your Arial font is corrupt. Uninstall it and reinstall it.

I opened up another word document and could go between sanserif and arial,
but i cannot in this one document that i have all sanserif in. this tells me
that it isnt something with the font it is with the document. the only reason
i do not want to use sanserif is because it cuts words in half if they do not
fit on the line (within margins) they cut off i.e. pho
ne

instead of keeping the word together i.e phone

any other ideas?

Then there's something funky with that document. Can you change the font to
something else?

MS Sans Serif is a screen font, not a Unicode font. It uses the old ASCII
encoding. You may have better luck pasting your text into Notepad, then
copy/pasting back into Word.

No I cannot change the font to anything else.
I noticed that if I open the document and type in sanserif (current font)
and then change the font to anything (arial) it will convert correclty, but
if I write in sanserif and then save the document then try to convert the
text it gives the boxes.

I also tried copying the text( a portion) into a new word document and then
without saving the document changing the text and it changed the font to the
boxes.

i also tried pasting inot notepad per another idea but that only returned
boxes.
