Changing File Extentions On XP

How do you change file extentions on Windows XP after teh
file has allready been dowloaded, saved, etc...?

I know that on previous versions of windows all you had to
do was reaname it and add ".ext" but on XP it doesnt work.

First set your folder options to not hide extensions Tools/Folder
Options/View tab. Uncheck Hide Extension for Known File Types.

Then you will see the extension, and can rename the file.

Changing the file extension name will not cause the file to be of that
extension type. You need to open it using its program and then save it as
the file type you desire. That will change both the extension name and the
actual file itself.

Example: Changing a .bmp picture (stuff.bmp) to a .jpg extension name
(stuff.jpg) won't "feed the bulldog". It won't open and will tell you its
not the type file advertised. I have PaintShopPro set as my program for
both .bmp and .jpg files. I changed the extension name of a .bmp to .jpg
and it wouldn't open it, giving me notice that it was not a valid .jpg file.

But I CAN open the .bmp file in PSP, and choose Save As: and save it as a
..jpg file. Now it BECOMES a .jpg file in both name and type..

You need to have Folder Options - View set to *not* HIde file
extensions. Then you can right click a file in Explorer and take
Rename, arrow back over the extension, hit del to delete and type in
the new one
