Changing Drive Letters

I am running XP Pro on a AMD 64 system with 1 G ram. When I reloaded windows
I had my second hard drive (2 partitions) unplugged to keep Windows from
picking up on an existing build. When I plugged the 2nd hard drive back in
the drive letters came after the CD rom drives (I have 2). I unplugged the
CD Roms and rebooted hoping to get the hard drive letters to change. Guess
what. They didn't. My first hard drive is C, my second hard drive is G and
F (2 partitions).

How do I get my hard drive to change it letters?

How do I get my hard drive to change it letters?

Do it in Disk Management: Right click My Computer | Manage | Disk
Management. Right click on the drive you want to change, and select change
drive letter. This should work for any partitions except the boot or system
partitions.

You can change the drive letters by going to Start>Control
Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management and choose Disk Management.
You should see the drives on your system on the right panel of the window.
Highlight the one you want to change and right-click. You should see Change
Drive Letter and Paths as one of the options. Choose this and change the
drive(s) to what you need. You may have to go through a two-stage change to
get the drives to assigned letters you want.

As Rock says but change F to H, G to F and H to G. You cannot change a
drive to a letter already being used.

Any letters in use won't be listed so of course you can't change to
that..lol

Not everyone sees things as clearly as you! Sometimes it is better to
say the obvious in the first place.

Often I see experts posting the right solution but not giving simple
instructions on how to carry it out. Example. Windows Update Fails.
Expert asks "What is Error Code" -result user not sure how to get it.
Better way -canned response:

What error code?

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed
Icon in the Status Column. What does it say?

Merrell10 wants F and G to be D and E.

Merrell10,
If the CD ROMs are unplugged, drive letters D and E should be available.

Or
change the CD ROMs to unused letters.
This will make D and E available for the two partitions.
Now you can use F and G for the CD ROMs or continue using the other letters.

Sure I understand your point, but this situation is a bit different from the
error one your talking about. You go to change the drive letter, and those
letters that are already assigned won't be in the list to change to. The OP
already knows those drive letters are taken. A moments reflection would
lead you to the process. But ok, I concede your point.

way....."...lol

I take your point Ron.

I have never bothered overmuch regarding how drives are lettered. My
DVD drive is M and when I had two CD drives were they were M and N. It
becomes clearer to me now how this occurred.

What did concern me was when my system was dual booting. The drive
letters were different in Windows 98 from those in Windows XP. One
drive was not recognised in Windows 98. It made for problems on some
occasions.
