changing Domain name

hello,
i have a DC that has a "Domain name (pre-Windows 2000)"
that is different from the actual domain name.
because of this i am having issues adding another Domain
controller. is there any way i can change this field?

the field in question is in "active directory domains and
trusts" and the general tab.

What ever the NetBIOS domain name is should not affect adding a DC to the
domain. Add the DC using the DNS name. As long as the DNS name is not a
single label name you should be able to add your DC.
Just make sure the machine your adding has been joined as a member first and
that it is using only the internal DNS server for the AD Domain.
