How can I change the default print setting in PowerPoint such that everytime
I hit Cntrl + P, I can print handouts instead of slides. However, I do not
want to have to change the default for each file through the options diaglog
box.

Thanks

Shyam's Save The Trees add=in might do exactly what you need.
And it's free:

Thanks for replying Steve. However, this didn't work for me. Even rebooted
the comp after installing add-in, but no dice. Meanwhile I kept playing with
the software and found out that there is a way to circumvent the problem. If
I create a design template with the proper print settings and always use that
template to create my slides, it works... even if I apply further design
templates to it. The only thing I will lose in this process is the ability to
create a new presentation the shortcut way. I will necessarily have to go
through the new presentation dialog box and use the saved template.

If you have any other suggestions that are simpler than the one I just found
out, I would be very happy to hear from you.

Best,

Do you mean that it didn't install correctly or that it doesn't do what you want
once installed?

You probably need to set your PowerPoint macro security settings to medium or lower
temporarily.

Even rebooted

Set the security to low, reinstalled it, still doesn't work. The first time I
hit print, it gives me the message, "Compile error in hidden module:
basSystem." After clicking on "Ok" for this pop up message, I can go ahead
and hit print again with the print dialog box popping up alright. However, it
still prints the slides, and not the handouts.

You'll probably need to contact Shyam about this, but one other thought: I'm betting
that the add-in requires PPT 2000 or higher. Do you use '97, perhaps?

I'm getting the same error message. I've emailed the author, and offered to
help if He'd care to share source code. This is too good an idea to let die
for lack of maintenencde. For that matter, it should be incorporated into
Powerpoint!
