Changing Default location of Personal.xls macro workbook?

P

Hi

I am having a problem with Personal.xls macro workbook. In that when
create a personal macro workbook it goes to the default location. Th
problem is that because I am working on a network and my login scrip
only keeps the settings for the current session, and is wiped out whe
I log out. So when I login again the personal macro workbook ha
disappeared.

Is there anyway of changing the default location of the personal macr
workbook, and still getting it to open when starting Excel?

Thanks

Depends. It appears your organization is pretty stingent about cleaning up
'temporary' files. Do you mean that the default location is on the network?
Run Tools > Options..., select the General tab in the Options dialog. What
appears in the 'Default file location' and 'Alternative startup file
location' fields?

Are you using a shared PC? If so, your organization may have policies that
effectively prohibit you from having Personal.xls open automatically, but if
you can save workbooks to 'permanent' storage, you could save your
Personal.xls as a normal workbook where you store your others and load it
manually. A pain, but it'd prevent needing to rewrite it each time.

I am on a shared PC, and it's not that the policies won't allow it t
open automatically, the problems is when you create a personal macr
workbook it goes to the default location, and because I have a generi
profile all settings & information are lost when the session closes.
was therefore wondering is it possible to change where the persona
macro workbook is saved?

Thx

No, it's not possible to change where the personal workbook is saved by default
when you're working on a shared PC with a generic profile, at least not when you
have clever network admins who write generic user login scripts that ensure
plain vanila, rigidly generic settings on each login. That is, while you may
change the location in a given session, your admins may have ensured that the PC
will reset to the standard location in subsequent sessions. That's what I'd do
if I were a network admin. (Search for BOFH to get a clearer picure of me as an
admin.)

You still haven't answered whether the Options dialog's (Tools > Options...)
General tab's 'Alternative startup file location' field shows anything. If it
happens to show something like

C:\Documents and Settings\<your network ID here>\Applications\...

then you should be able to save a file named Personal.xls in that directory,
close Excel and reopen Excel. In this new session Excel should have loaded
Personal.xls from this alternative location, and Excel will then record macros
into this file *AND* save this file in this alternative, presumably persistent
location. Worth a try.

If this doesn't work or if the 'Alternative startup file location' field is
blank, then your only option would be saving a file named Personal.xls into the
same location you save your data files (or maybe in a subdirectory in case other
users save in the same top-level directory), then load Personal.xls manually
each time you start Excel.

Sorry for not answering your other question. The Alternate Star
Location is blank.

So it looks like I'll just have to create a Personal workbook and sav
it to another location and open it when I need it.

Thanks for your help.
