Changing default internet browser, WinXP

Help! I have been using Firefox for a few months now and have been
running it alongside IE. I have been trying to change Firefox to my
default browser: control panel>add/remove programs>set program access
and defaults. I have selected both the non-microsoft and the custom
radio buttons and have made the proper selections within each. After
making the selection, a window pops up and acknowledges the changes I
have made. After a restart, IE takes back over and Firefox is no longer
my default browser. Is there anyway to disable IE? I am running XP with
service pack 2, has anyone else experienced this problem? What other
settings need to be changed in order to have Firefox set as my default
Browser?

Open IE go to Tools/Internet Options and select the Programs tab. Uncheck
the box at the bottom. You shouldn't be having this problem so that might
not work.
