Good Web Browser Recommendation

J

Hi,

I use FireFox.

This morning, I tried to upload more "stuff" to Google Docs, but this
time, I am unable to upload. After searching Google's help via "Contact Us",
I learned that they are working on this "upload" issue with FireFox.
Note: I never had trouble uploading, using my current version of FireFox,
before. I assume some changes made at "Google Docs" recently provoked this
problem.

I don't want to use IE. Can you recommend another good Web Browser?

Thank You in Advance, John

You never mentioned checking your disk quota in your Google Docs
account. You only get 2GB for a free account.

http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=37603&cbid=-1pn50l251hyda&src=cb&lev=index

It says 1GB disk quota (despite the upload sizes being larger) but I
think they went to 2GB. Maybe not since the next article still shows
1GB for doc storage quota:

http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=39567

It's pretty easy to go over your docs disk quota when you're used to a
larger disk quota for your Gmail account. To see your current disk
quota and consumption of it for your Google Docs account, go to
doc.google.com, login, click on the cogwheel icon (representing config
settings for your account), and look under the Storage info. It'll say
"You are currently using x MB (x%) of your xxxx MB". The xxxx is
probably 1024, so you have 1024 MB or 1GB total disk space for your
documents.

Needless to say, there will be many opinions. But where I work (IT
Tech) I have tested many and used 2 "other" browsers.

BROWSERS I'VE USED:

1) Maxthon
http://www.maxthon.com/

Used for several years, but had problems with a "new" version in the
past. This still may be a good option with the current version.

Note that Maxthon uses the IE engine as its core. Also note their
video tutorials.

2) Firefox v6.0
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/

This is what I use now, at home and work. Really like the tools
(extensions aka Add-ons) and how it displays.

BROWSERS I'VE TESTED:

1) Opera
http://www.opera.com/

Did not like the way it displayed nor its poor options. I don't like
Widgets which Opera uses. It also had problems with our corporate
pages.

2) Safari (for Windows)
http://www.apple.com/safari/

This had to be the poorest browser in Windows (at the time I tested).
It refused to work with any or our corporate pages and many other WEB
pages. And occasionally crashed, which no other browser I tested did.

3) Chrome (Google)
http://www.google.com/chrome

My opinion, stay away from this one. There are just too many
security/privacy issues with Google Chrome (like gMail has).

IMHO Google is becoming too big for its britches anyway.

FINALLY:

Take a look at this page, "Comparison of WEB Browsers"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers

This page has almost anything you need to know about browsers.

Maxthon (all versions) have been my all time favorite. By the way,
Maxthon v3 uses either IE or Webkit as the core. And it switches
automatically and it decides which one would display a given website the
best. You can manually toggle it if you don't like it.

Oh really? Chrome also uses Webkit for its core. Although Maxthon uses a
modified version of Webkit, tweaked for speed and security.

6 already? Wow! I hadn't noticed their change in numbering policy. What bit
them? A major release number should change about once a year, not every 3 months.
Is it compatible with 3.6.xx, and does it make any sense to upgrade? I
haven't seen anything wrong with 3.6, and no lacking capability. Have they
added many useless features in 4-5-6 that destroy user experience, like they
did in Thunderbird 3 which I had to uninstall and go back to 2?

Since you don't specify what's useful to you or not I don't think
anyone can say.

Firefox 6 works well for me.

What I mean is, does it look and work as before? I don't mind any new
features, as long as they don't replace the old ones and don't force a change
in how one does things. I hope somebody can answer that. :) "Useless" is
indeed subjective, sorry about the confusion.
Compare how Thunderbird 3 changed the default appearance and behavior.
Instead of increasing technical functionality - like adding more editable
header fields or filter features, they added flashy trinkets and redesigned the
UI. That's my example of a non-welcome change.

No, it doesn't look and work as before. The interface changed a bit
in Firefox 4, but no functionality was lost. It took me a few
minutes to adjust and I've never thought about it since.

I never liked Thunderbird 2, but I think I like version 3 a little
better. I've never used any version regularly, though.

My opinion is from many security-site posts about privacy issues,
spamming, etc, not the browser as an app.

Firefox has gone through several upgrades since v3, it's up to v6.0 as
of a few days back. I gather you don't have "Check of updates...
notify" advanced option enabled?

You need not uninstall the version, UNLESS you made the mistake of the
default install folder "Firefox 3" which makes it version specific. My
install folder has always been just "Firefox" (non-version specific)
which means upgrades will be to the same folder.

Of course I have. But you probably forget that up to and including version
3, it downloads and installs only sub-version updates, and that's a Good Thing!
Otherwise, from time to time it reminds me indeed of a new version - 4 first,
later 5 - which I decline, telling to not bother me again. It hasn't said
anything about version 6 so far, though. That's why I was surprised.

I have an older computer that I don't work on - it's more of an operating
backup. I may install the new version there to see if I like it, and to test if
the boasting in the popup was true - it said that v5 was 6 times faster than v3.6.

FF v6.0 seems to have some problems handling tabs. Its Add-ons dialog is
also rather too elaborate for my taste. I switched back to v3.6.2.

The browser I like most is K-Meleon (last stable version 1.5.4), and I use
that as my default browser. It's very easy to configure and has many useful
features.

There is one feature I did not like starting with Firefox v5, they put
the Tabs at the TOP of the Firefox window (above Tool Bars), but they
did have the View option to put the tabs where the belong (IMHO) above
the page-display box.

I will never understand why they though Tabs that change what page is
displayed should be above the Tool Bars.

I think what they did is disappear the menu bar so as to make as much
space as possible for the page being displayed. The menu is available
from a dropdown to the left of the tabs. If you don't like it you can
easily tell it to show the menu bar as it did before.

That could be, but if stores would display so people could by widescreen
monitors with a 16:10 aspect ratio instead of the typical 16:9, there'd
be more vertical space for page display.

I know if I ever replace the CRT's I have on my Windows computers,
that's what I'm shopping for.
