Hi Graham,

You need to do a repair install with the new CD and key. Follow these steps
to do a repair install which should preserve your data, settings, and
programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that the retail disk may not have all needed drivers for your
preinstalled system. Make sure you can get these from the manufacturer
before you begin.

I think your advice is the only way but does that mean I have to reinstall
SP1 and every update I have done in the past.......Oh Gosh I think the
answer is yes...I should have been a good guy from the start and bought the
real thing..
I wonder why the other cd id changers and Microsoft scripts don't work with
the XP Pro that came with my PC...In fact everything on the PC works
perfectly and the only reason I want to change the CD Key is because it is
the right thing to do...better late than never

Hi,

Your programs will (should) survive, updates will need to be reinstalled.

Hello Graham,
A couple of things.
The article 328874 is for changing volume product keys on volume media. It
may work under some circumstances if the product key and media are of the
same type. It sounds like you have OEM installed media and you purchased
Retail media, which is why you cannot change the product key. The Product
Key has to match the media that was used to make the install.
If it does not you have to use Rick's answer to allow you to change the key.

Windows XP Product Key finder:

Includes an option to change the existing product key to a valid one
without doing a reinstall.

Good luck

You will probably have to do a 'repair' reinstallation, using the key
then. And even that may give trouble in saying that you have a
non-matching CD. If you try to change key on an installed system which
is not the same setup 'type' it will be seen as not correct for 'this'
system and rejected

Not necessarily. I've been able to repair install over a corporate copy with a
retail copy using the retail copy's keys. It worked but required a reinstall all
of the updates and patches as well as a few apps that got broken in the process.
Activation was necessary as well. But the key thing is, it did work.
