Changing Adminstrators password for the domain

In windows 2000 Active directory at install you are ask
to the administrator password. I have been under the
impression that this is a separate password from the
Domain administrator password.

My question is are the two passwords connected? If you
change the Domain Administrator password does this also
change the password for Active directory?

If you are talking about the Active Directory Services
Restore Mode password then this has nothing to do with the
administrator password. You change your admin password,
but must remember your AD Restore Mode password in case
you need it one day. (Hope that never happens!) I think
there's a tool for changing that password though. Search
technet for more.

I this might just be it, but i would like to clairify.
When i build a windows 2k server and install active
directory it always ask me for the active directory logon
and password. Is this the AD restore mode password?

Nope.

If you are building a member server and joining a domain,
you supply a username/password with admin rights to add
the compuuter account into the domain.

When you run dcpromo to turn the member server into a DC,
you supply a password to be used in the event that you
have to do an authoratitive restore of that domain
controller. (Because it was the only one you had, or your
active directory became corrupt, or you accidentally
deleted something you need to restore. Moral: always
always always have more than one DC and be careful what
you are up to! ;-))
