Changing a Servers (DC) computer name

N

Nick

How is this possible, because i have read that you have to:

1. Demote the DC
2. Rename the Server
3. Premote the DC using dcpromo.

but my questions are

1. Will all the user account and policies be deleted?
2. Does anyone have a guide to doing this?
3. What other application will be affected by the name change?

TIA

1. Will all the user account and policies be deleted?

If this is your only domain controller, YES! But you should never have a single
domain controller in a domain, you have no redundancy for failure.
2. Does anyone have a guide to doing this?

Well you type dcpromo, follow the prompts, reboot, log in, change the name as
normal, reboot, dcpromo back into the domain.
3. What other application will be affected by the name change?

Anything that points at that server by name.

we have 2 DC's but only one DC seems to have Users and computers on it?
anyone know why and how to rectify this?

Only one has the AD or you only see the MMC console on one?? Open the
ADU&C on your "good" controller, right click, and tell it to point at the
other one to be sure.

You NEED to make sure that these are communicating and solid or you WILL
lose your users.

Install the support tools from the CD. Then use DCDiag and Replmon to
verify server/ AD health.

Ran DCDIAG on both DC and results are as follows:

ELROND - MAIN DC
FILEPRINT - SECONDARY DC

Can you offer some advice on the tests?

Nick,

Start | Programs | Admin Tools | Active Directory Users and Computers

Then right click on the top node and connect to a different DC.

Also, are there any FRS errors in the Event log, as the Diags would suggest?
Try running the diags in verbose mode.

Nick,

If both of the Domain Controllers are working then you should be able to
open up ADUC on both. And you should be able to sit infront of DC01 and
open up that ADUC as well as on DC02 ( as Ryan suggested ).

I would check DNS as well as your replication. To check the replication
open up a command prompt and enter repadmin /showreps /v as well as repadmin
/showconn. You should have an incoming connection object from DC01 to DC02
as well as an incoming connection object from DC02 to DC01.

I might also install and run FRSDiag. You can do a google search for
it.....

As Ryan suggested, look in the event logs.

Cary Shultz [A.D. MVP]

I figured that there would not be any problem with AD Replication. My usual
guess would be that there is a problem with RPC. What happens if you go to
one Domain Controller and you right click My Computer and select 'Manage'?
Computer Management opens up, correct! I mean, for that computer....you
would see 'Computer Management (Local)'. Now, right click Computer
Management and select 'Connect to another computer'. Simply select another
Domain Controller. Are you allowed to open it?

But, I think that Ryan might be on to something. It looks like there was/is
a problem with SYSVOL. Tell us this: what happens if you open up the
command prompt on each Domain Controller ( more interested in FILEPRINT )
and enter - without the quote marks - "net share"?

If you do not have a shared SYSVOL and / or NETLOGON please take a look at
the following MSKB Article:
