Changed password- no taskbar, no icons, no workie,..

Just a blue desktop background. My old personal settings were the
handsome windows classic but now,.. sob,.. nothing. I originally
installed without a password and set up the system and someone
said,.." you have to have a password". So I made one and now when I
boot it challenges me and I type in my magic word and then it say's,
"windows is applying your personal settings" and then I get the pale
blue background but no tb, icons, start button etc. I tried removing
the pw but it's just the same. What did I do wrong? I should boot in
safemode and "change the way users log on" or something. Many thanks
