Changed drive letters

D

Daniel

I am running XP Pro
on a PC with 2 hard drives and 2 DVD drives.
They are
C: Main Hard Drive
D: DVD RAM
E: DVD ROM
F: 2nd Hard Drive

I have had this configuration
for 12 months.
Yesterday I booted up and there
was a consistency problem with one
of the disks.
The consistency scan ran for 14 hours then
I rebooted.
Now the 2nd Hard Drive is the E:
and the DVD ROM is the F:
Problem being that most programs start from
the 2 nd Hard Drive.

I have full Antivirus, Trojan and Firewall
protection and MS Antispyware,
Adaware and Spybot.

Does anyone have any ideas on what has gone wrong,
and how I can change the drive letters back.

thanks

Daniel

Run diskmgmt.msc and reassign the drive letters. Change the DVD to an unused
letter, change the hard drive to F:, change the DVD back to E:. Download the
disk diagnostic from the manufacturer of the hard drive and test the drive.
Backup any important data on the drive before doing this.

when I run Diskmgmt only the two hard drives appear, there are no DVD drives
in the box.

Open Computer management. On the action menu click rescan and/or refresh.
Then click view | bottom and select graphical view. You should now see your
CD drives listed. Just re alphabetise in the order you want.

Repost if you still have a problem.

Okay I did that and there was no change,
the DVD drives are shown under removable storage
but there is no option the change the drive letters.

I ran system restore to before the problem started
and the drive letters are back to where they should be
but I cannot access the F hard drive.

I ran HD Tach and the Maxtor test floppy and both passed without issues.
I also tested my C Drive and also no problem.

If you have any ideas on what has gone wrong or how to fix it I would
appreciate it.

thanks

Run diskmgmt.msc. If the DVD drive doesn't show up then do as Glen
suggested. Right click on the drive icon on the left. The change drive
letter option should be in the menu.

The drive letters are now correct,
I have run HD Tach and The Maxtor
Hard Drive test utility on both
of the drives, showing they are okay
BUT the second Hard Drive cannot be accessed
through explorer, I get a message "F is not accessible".
At the command prompt I get a message saying "the drive is
not formatted or corrupt"

Is there any recovery software out there that will enable
me to access the drive and at least copy the data onto my C drive.

thanks for your help

Daniel
