change volume within audio clip?

Is there a way in MM to change the volume of an audio clip
within the clip (not for the whole clip)? The problem is,
I want to fade back audio slightly (not to zero) when
someone starts talking on the video clip and then fade the
audio back to the initial volume level. If I split the
audio into 3 clips and reduce the volume of the middle
clip, the volume changes are too harsh. If I use audio
fade-ins or -outs, the audio fades to zero. So what?

I discovered a solution to my problem, but it is very
impractical:
Step 1: Split the audio clip into 5 clips. Step 2: Copy
and paste clip two and clip four, which results in seven
clips. Step 3: Combine clip 1 with clip 2, combine clip 3
with clip 4 and clip 5, and combine clip 6 with clip 7.
Now you should have 3 clips. Step 4: Drag and overlap the
clips until the music sounds like one clip again. Step 5:
Reduce the volume of the middle clip. Pheew! Anyone with a
simpler solution?
