Change TIFF to JPG?

S

Scot

Using WinXP Pro.
Does anyone know how I can change TIFF files to JPG files with the software
that comes with XP Pro and XP Office Pro?

I recently upgraded from ME to XP Pro. Reinstalled my Canon n1240u flatbed
scanner. The application that now comes up is Microsoft Office Document
Scanning. The only Save As option is the TIFF format. The only viewing
option is Microsoft Office Document Imaging. I need to get these new TIFF
files into JPG format. The problem is that Microsoft Photo Editor "can't
open file" for TIFF files.

Thanks,

Open the TIFF file with PAINT (mspaint.exe) either by
START/All Programs/Accessories/PAINT or START/Run mspaint.

It will open as a TIFF, just use the "save as" command and
save as a JPG.

You can use a right click on any TIFF file, select "open
with" select PAINT and check "always open with" to
re-associate TIFF files with PAINT.

Thanks for the reply. Trying to open the TIFF files with Paint returns this
ERROR MESSAGE:
"Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file,
or its format is not currently supported."
A Microsoft application created the TIFF files, and it's a Microsoft
application that now says it can't read the files. The Microsoft Office
Imaging application opens the file perfectly, but it can't save them as
JPGs. Is there a reason why PAINT can't read these files, and something I
can do to get it to read them?

Suggestions:
- Are the graphic filters from Office Setup installed?
- Try a different program for this task. Irfanview is a small but powerful
app: http://www.irfanview.com/

I don't know the answer to your problem or why Paint can't
open your tiff files. You can try IRFANVIEW (free
application). It might be that Paint wants only a three
letter tif extension. You might try renaming the file if
that is a problem, but that might prevent Office from using
the file, I just don't know for sure.
Paint should open a tif file, it does on my machine.
Maybe somebody else will chime in or you can ask on an
Office newsgroup, such
as microsoft.public.office.misc

Thanks. Can you tell me how to determine if the "graphic filters" from
Office Setup are installed?

You can download a free graphics program and use it to convert or save tiff
as almost any image format. You can Google "graphics programs free" and
find many of these. One of the best is IrfanView which you can download
here.

Office Setup are installed?
When you run Office setup or access Office in Add/Remove Programs, you get
a screen asking if you want to remove, repair or add/remove components.
Choose add/remove components. Following along with the screens, check the
subcategories under each Office program, Office Tools and the "Shared"
category. If the filters are installed, you'll see the drive icon.
Otherwise, you'll see a drive icon with a 1 or a red X on it.

Would urge you to give Irfanview a try regardless of how you fix this. It's
a very handy little graphics viewing program to have. Quite powerful for
its size, has a ton of plugins for various multimedia file types and (best
of all) it's free.

Additional comment: TIF files can be an odd bunch. There is no single
standard and can vary slightly. It's not unheard of to run into
compatibility problems between programs when working with TIF files.
