Change the length of file names and folders

How do you change the size or length of file names or
folder names? Currently I can only type 8 characters per
line in my file names or folder names. It bumps the 9th
letter or space down to the second line and then the 17th
character or line down. It makes titles of files or
folders look strange. These are files/folders that are on
my desktop.
