How do I change the picture windows xp pro shows at the login screen,
without removing the user icons (so I keep fast user switching available)?

The easiest method is to click start, double-click on the picture displayed
for your account, browse for the picture you want to use in the
popup,double-click on your selection. Done.

OOPS -- I may have misunderstood your question. The method I gave is for
changing the picture used for the user icon.

Hi Larry,

I may have misunderstood the question also. ;-) Either way, we ought to be
covered.

Not quite. The background picture on which the user pictures are
displayed is what I want to change.
I found a utility that lets me change the boot picture, very nice, but
then you get the blue on blue with the user icons, and I thought it
would be even nicer if I could change that, too. What the tweakui
(thanks, I had an older version, this new one is even better) way does
is you see your desktop background briefly, then the other screen with
the icons is displayed.

Thanks anyway.

I found it! There is a freeware program called logonstudio from Stardock
that lets me do what I want: to change the login screen that comes up
with the user icons AFTER the boot screen. Stardock also has bootskin,
that lets you change the boot screen itself. And there are many screens
for both programs on wincustomize.com.
Just thought I'd let you guys know. "Problem" solved.
