Change in Computer name

Scott

I have a computer who has a computer name of previous employee. The OS is
Windows XP Pro and is a member of the company domain. I log on an
administrator of local computer and a client of the domain with
administrator right to change the computer name. It keeps on telling me the
bad name. I downloaded some VBA utilities to change the registry
automatically without success. I changed the computer names many times on
other pcs successfully and at loss why the name cannot be changed on this
pc. Can someone share with any tips I might overload to resolve it.

Many thanks,

Scott

You need to be logged into the domain.....have you tried this as the domain
admin or equivalent?
What is the exact error you get?
Also, check your event logs...

I suggest you take a step back and look at the big picture view - don't name
computers after people. Use consistent boring, standardized naming
conventions - WORKSTATION01, 02, 03, or similar. You can always use the
description field in ADUC to enter the name of the current computer user so
you can see who's where while doing admin stuff.

RajKohli,

ok I will write down the error message next time. Is the User Name on the
top bar of the Start menu? I normally use FirstNameLastName for computer
name and user name is FirstName LastName. Is it ok?

Thanks,

Scott

Don't name computers after people - it's a huge pain, See my reply above.
I would also recommend that you not use spaces in
usernames.....firstnamelastname, or firstname.lastname, or
firstinitiallastname (you get it).

Hi,
Have you tried removing the computer from the domain and then adding it back
in with the new name?

In the alternative, name the computers after dead people.

Yes. That is the User Name. Try a different computer name. Also take care
about another User Names if any. I have 7 Computer in my lab and I specify
the names according to their Processor like Celeron-1Ghz, Pentium-4,
Pentium4-New.

Hope this help, let us know!
