change format style in task pane

The select all button is grey and won't let me select a specific style in a
document to change all at the same time. It is like a setting got changed or
something!

For this to be active, you must have "Keep track of formatting" enabled in
Tools | Options | Edit. But you don't need it to update a style. If you
make the change to the style (Modify Style), the change will be
automatically propagated to all the paragraphs in that style.
