Change default JPEG quality setting in FP 2000

G

Guest

Does anyone know a way to change the setting of the default for JPEG image
quality. It defaults to 75 and that is just crap by today's standards and
for my needs. I want it to default to 96 but it just goes right back to 75
and every time i edit a page, I have to go through every picture and re-set
it to 96...and then the thing wants to resave the image again when i
do...even though that's what i saved it at already...several times....which
is a nasty idea to continually resave a jpeg...help!! This limitation is
driving me insane. Is it maybe adjustable in newer versions of FP?

Don't use FrontPage to "manipulate" images.
Use an image editor.
A great "free" one is IrfanView.

As long as you first import the image into FP before inserting on a page,
the 75 means nothing. It is at the same dpi that you created it as. Ignore
what FP says.

However, if you don't import the image first, or you use FP to do any of the
imaging editing, it will change it to 75.

Thanks for all the prompt responese. All the images were imported. I use
Photoshop to do all my editing and optimizing. If I change the page at
all...even just some text...it wants to resave the images and I know it's
because it wants to take them back down to 75 because I made the mistake of
letting it re-save them before and it was definitely a noticable difference
when viewing the pages. Sigh.

Maybe it's time I found a more versatile or newer page editor...any
suggestions? I am a software developer by day but the site is for the art
photography I do on the side so I do like the time-saving simplicity of FP.

Re-read my original reply. It is NOT changing your dpi. Just leave the
settings completely alone.

I was just messing around trying to get FP to replicate this and could not...even by not Importing the image the correct way.

The only way I even get FP to prompt to save the image is not importing it, rather Copy/Paste...but that still did not mess with the resolution either.

I have seen that slider that says do you want FP to save your jpgs at 75 I
usually slide it to 100.
why is it there if it's not doing something? Maybe it only refers to the
buttons and graphics you make in FP not the photos you insert?
I do not want FP to modify my image sizes or properties.
There are also some gif settings in that GUI.

As long as your do not let FP save your image, the dialog has no impact on your images.

so don't use insert? put the images in a folder first?
what about the slideshows does that re-save over the orig?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Only the thumbnail images are saved by FP.

Create/edit images in a image application, then import, then insert on your pages, this way FP
doesn't touch the image quality, any method where you are prompted to allow FP to save the image or
you let FP create a thumbnail version, then FP is in control of the image quality.
