Change default from Lock to Log Off

Our students are supposed to log off the Windows 2000 pcs after a class. Often the pcs get locked, because in the dialog box that appears after CTRL-ALT-DEL, the default button is Lock PC. Instead of clicking on Log Off, many people will just hit Enter, which locks the pc.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change which button is the default in this window

Thanks
Jack

I am not aware of a means to change which button is the default. However,
you can add Log off as a selection to the Start Menu. To do this manually
(you did not say if these workstation are part of a workgroup or a domain),
right click the task bar. From Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, go to the
Advanced tab. In Start Menu Settings at the bottom of the Advanced Page,
Display Logoff is the third item down. Check that check box, then choose
[OK].

And, of course, tell everyone to choose log off from the Start Menu.

If you want to get absolutely draconian, and if these accounts are in a
domain but only used in class, you can configure an Active session limit for
the account's properties, in Active Directory Users and Computers, on the
Sessions tab. Or, less draconian, an Idle session limit.

Also, you could (and probably should) use a group policy to disable locking
the workstation at all.

If the machines are standalone, run gpedit.msc - it's under User
Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon/Logoff - there are ways to
copy the settings from one computer to another, if you look it up) If they
are in an Active Directory, you should set it up from the server end.

For a classroom setting, you should probably be locking down a lot of things
in there (desktop wallpaper, IE settings, etc etc etc).

Just make sure you read up some on how to use group policies and what the
settings do - if you do it wrong, you can end up locking out the administrator
from doing things, too.

Hi

even if the machines are on a domain you can edit the GPO for the OU where the students accounts are kept and go to Use
Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon/Logoff and enable the 'disable lock computer' setting

If I'm right this should grey out the lock computer option on the CTRL-ALT-DEL dialogue

Good Luck
