I have been using VS 2005 since the April Beta 2 release and am now using
the August CTP. Mostly doing web based development and a bit of forms work.
All internally deployed with a small public web site. All is well. Very very
happy.

Now we are looking at a handful of CF based projects running on Symbol MC50
PocketPCs. Can anyone provide some general comments as to the stability /
usability / deployability of CF based applications using Visual Studio 2005?
How about the mobile edition of SQL? I played with SQL CE a bit way back
when and found it very unlikable.... We are not using SQL 2005 in our
organization at this point. Does that exclude using Mobile SQL? or can it be
used with SQL 2000?

Applications would be deployed within our organization but to more remote
locations. Likely a race between completion and the Nov 7th release date so
I am not highly concerned about any licensing issues.

Time for me to start reading the CF blogs. I feel really out of touch on
this one.

Thanks,

Andrew

A bit more:

Another issue is that we are using VS2005. I don't even have VS2003 on my
dev manchine any more. Can I still do CF 1.x with VS2005 or am I limited to
CF 2.0?

Andrew,

There's a lot ot like in VS 2005 for mobile devices, so I'd certainly
encourage you to investigate it. Since the MC50 runs WM2003SE you would be
able to deploy .NET Compact Framework 2.0 on it and use SQL Mobile, which is
a big step up from SQL CE. You can use SQL Mobile with SQL Server 2000 by
the way.

I don't see any reason not to start developing now on VS 2005 beta 2 as long
as you don't mind waiting for November 7 for release. The current beta is
quite usable.

Andrew,

You can still do .NetCFv1 on VS 2003, but not all older platforms supported
by VS 2003 are supported for VS 2005. This should not be a problem for you
since you are targetting WM2003SE however. And you should be aware that SQL
Mobile requires .NetCFv2.

Ginny,

Thanks for the good info. This is exactly what I was looking for.
