I purchased XP Pro from an auction. The seller neglected
to state that his copy was for Gateway PCs only. I want
to install it on my Dell PC. Will it work or am I stuck
with a version I can't use?

You are probably stuck. My guess is that the version you have may be
BIOS-locked to a Gateway PC. Also, if it is the same as other Gateway
disks I've seen, it will be a restore image, made specifically for
Gateway machines and for a specific Gateway *model*. Remember that old
adage, "if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't"?

A Latin phrase comes to mind: Caveat emptor.

Greetings --

You're probably stuck. OEM CDs from major PC manufacturers are
usually specifically designed to install only upon the specific
brand/model for which they were designed.

What you need to do is report the company that sold you this CD to
your local law enforcement agencies (you've been defrauded, after
all), your local Chamber of Commerce, the local chapter of the Better
Business Bureau, and to Microsoft.
(http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/) You might also look into
getting your money back via Small Claims Court.

You are stuck. Apart from anything else, that CD was licensed solely to
the machine it was supplied with. And probably only matches that
hardware
