Certain keys don't display the proper character

I loaded Word on my new laptop with Vista. Certain keys don't display
properly in Word. For example, the '?' key results in an "E". The '#' or '$'
key results in single quotes being displayed?

Sometimes it doesn't happen and sometimes it does.

If it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't then you have two different
keyboard patterns set up in Windows regional settings and you are
inadvertently switching between them. Delete the inappropriate one.
