Centre Gradient Fill in PPT 2007 unlike PPT 2003 - How to do it?

In version 2003, creating shading and depth was easy by adding a gradient
fill, using the 'from Center' (selested from shading styles) and sliding the
transparency on.

However, in 2007, I liked everything ...but the one tool I've come to use
the most seems to be the only one which has radically changed and has become
more 'un' user-friendly - maybe because I haven't figured out how to use it?

How can I create the same Centre Gradient Fills in PPT 2007?

In PowerPoint 2007, do the following:
1. Select the shape in which you want center gradient.
2. Select the "Format" tab in tthe Ribbon.
3. Click the "Shape Fill" drop down menu.
4. Select "Gradient" sub-menu.

You should find your center gradient options in there.

We know that. That's in the books. But none of them talk about (and I have 3
different ones) about how to use the gradient, just here it is. It's very
different. There is no tubular shadow, you know, dark at top and bottom,
light in the middle of a bar or column. That was very easy in 2003. I've
tried using the stops, etc but haven't been able to achieve the correct
effect. I'm updating a prior report and want the new graphs to look the same
as existing. Where is literature about how the gradient and stops, etc work.
Is it like PhotoShop type SW?
