Celeron Vs P4 (Running Vista)

Hi guys quick question

at the moment im running Windows Vista with an Celeron D 356 the specs of it
are

Speed: 3.06Ghz
System Bus: 533Mhz
L2 Cache Memory: 256kb

what i would like to do is upgrade to the Pentium 4 650 which has these
specs:

Speed: 3.40Ghz
System Bus: 800Mhz
L2 Cache Memory: 2MB

now i can see that the P4 is better but would i see much diffrence?

I mainly use my PC to play a few games and also abit of video editing etc

but how much would this CPU speed up my PC?

as for other specs of my pc they are

2GB DDR RAM
100GB HDD
80GB HDD
ATI X1650 Pro (AGP)

I would say you will see a substantial improvement (though the video card
might be a limiting factor if you want to play *new* games.

The applications you describe are ones that are very much limited by the
lower spec of the celeron part. Only thing I would say is that for Vista,
look to see if the motherboard you have will take a dual core part (ideally
a core2duo).

Ok so ive just upgraded to this CPU and in Vista is shows up as 3.40Ghz but
if i run the Intel CPU identification tool then it only appears as 2.40Ghz

i no it has Enhanced speed step, so could that be it?

Not much. I've been building Vista PCs with G965 motherboards and
both Celeron (256k, 512k) and Pentium 4 (1M, 2M) at 3GHz and 3.2GHz,
and moving from one to the other, I can't "feel" the difference as I
can between those with 512M RAM and those with 1G RAM.

Vista's performance thingie shows a ho-hum difference on CPU score,
but the Aero score improves with the P4, perhaps due to
HyperThreading, or maybe as an artefact?

Vista's said to make better use of dual-core, so if I were locked out
of Core Due due to motherboard limitations, I might consider a 3.4GHz
Pentium D when the price settles further (it's not bad for the 3.2GHz
D at the moment). Else I'd wait a year for Core 2 Due price collapse.

Generally, unless I get a 50-100% speed boost on CPU, it usually
doesn't feel worth the effort to open the case, let alone buy parts.

The former usually prefers better 3D chipset, but the latter may
benefit from a dual-core CPU, especially if pricing does not force you
to retreat on GHz.

Video editing may respond better to larger/faster HDs and more
efficient partitioning and partition role allocation, though any CPU
boost would also help. Are those puny HDs leftovers from an old PC?

I ignore the monikers "Celeron" and "Pentium", as these can overlap
over time (e.g. a 512k 533MHz chip could be old P4 or new Celeron).
Having said that, his Celeron is 256k rather than 512k, and the P4 he
aspires to is 2M rather than 1M, so that's a best-case shuffle. I'd
still call it a shuffle rather than a leap, though.
