CDs not showing normally in "My Computer"

Been burning music to CDs using Nero and the CD/DVD writer no longer shows
the CD label and volume info. The pop up no longer appears either when I
insert a CD asking what I want to do. However, if I do a restart with a CD in
the drive "My Computer" does show the disk info but when the CD is removed
the name of the ejected disk remains until the next restart. Other devices
USB flash drives/mp3 players/digital camera show up normally in "My
Computer". When you plug them in they are identified and the popup asks what
to do. When removed they disappear from "My Computer". I've tried system
restore but it hasn't fixed it. Any advice would be much appreciated. Gavin

Here is a possible solution posted in the general group by Nightowl:

"Open Regedit and navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDrom

In the right-hand pane look for the value AutoRun and make sure it is
set to 1. If not, change, close Regedit and reboot."

I would have added remarks about exporting the key before the edit.

Thanks Ernie (and Nightowl),
I've checked the path and Autorun has the value 0x00000000(0). I've never
edited the registry before and am not sure where to place the 1, I'm guessing
it goes in the brackets (replacing the existing 0). Sorry if this is a bit
wet but I've seen dire warnings about incompetent registry edits so
clarification would give me confidence. Incidentally, do you have any idea
about why this happened? Regards, Gavin

OK, Gavin. Open Regedit and get to the place, then:

If you first highlight (click) the CDRom key in the left pane, which you had
done to see the values, and click File > Export and save the registry file
in your Documents it will act as a backup in case of problems.

Then, in the right pane, right click the AutoRun icon and click Modify. The
value will be selected so just type the required data, 1 in your case, and
OK your edit.

You may need to reboot for the result to become apparent. If disaster,
navigate to your backup reg file, right click and select Merge which will
write the original values back in that key.

Best of luck,
ern.

Thanks Ernie for the clear instructions, your diagnosis was spot on. I did what you suggested and it worked! Please may I ask you again what most likely caused this problem? I don't feel good about depending on a computer which behaves in ways I don't understand. If you're too busy or there are too many possible explanations, just ignore my request. However, whether you decide to respond or not, your generous help is much appreciated, Gavin

You said you had been using Nero, there may be some Readme.txt or Manual for
that program which gives a clue.
The user who Nightowl helped had been burning CDs but didn't mention the
program.

In case the problem surfaces every time you use the program you could, as a
work around, keep an export of the good CDrom key available to merge after
your burning sessions.

Thanks again Ernie, I wondered if it might have been Nero. I've checked the release notes for the next version which include these words: "Windows XP autoplay handling was not working correctly". So I think you were right again. Your computer knowledge is impressive, thanks for sharing it with me. Gavin

Glad to help, once you get on the upgrade treadmill it seems there is no
getting off. I hope you can get a free upgrade of your Nero.
