hi there
my cdrw has suddenly stopped working when i put any cd in the disc
in light flashs for a few minutes but it does not load .i thought initally it
was a autoplay problem but i ran the microsoft autoplay fix program but it
found no problems.the cdrw is detected on boot up and shows no problem in
device manager yet still does not read any disks is this a software problem
or did it just die peacefully in the night.
hope someone can help

"It's dead Jim."

You could unplug the PC from the 120VAC line, open the case and reseat the
IDE ribbon cables. Otherwise, it could very well be kaput.
Good news is a new one is ~$30US and a DVD burner $60-85US.

The CDRW/DVDRW is not necessarily dead. There are other issues which can
cause this. For example, my two new DVDRW work just fine as long as I unload
Easy Media Creator 8 (it actually started in v7.5). One experiment you can do
is to wait about 10 minutes and see if Autoplay detects the media.
Unofrtunately I am looking for the solution to this part of the problem. I
have tried the regedit lower/upper filter fix, diabling the default Wxp
recording feature and uninstalling all other cd/dvd writing software and
installing the EMC8 in diagnostic mode. That still does not fix the problem
