Just swapped CDRW drives and now new one will play music but won't write
files to the CD. Windows xp service pack 2. Old CDRW was slower but worked
fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated

If the burning software came bundled with the original CDRW drive and you
replaced it with another as you say, you will not be able to use the old
drives burning app with the newer one..

What burning app are you using..?

May help to use the above free version, your call..

I was using MS CD Wizard for the burning software that comes with
XP.......not a 3rd party app.

I did not. Just removed and replaced and rebooted and figured XP would do
the rest. If the unit plays music CD's, doesn't this mean that XP found it
as new hardware and recognized it?

Windows isn't particularly bright. If you just switched them, then the
reduced functionality is the result of windows just using what was
already installed.

Well, in "My Computer" do you have a recording tab showing in the drives
properties window, if so, check the box to "enable cd recording on this
drive"..

Also, type "services.msc" in the *run* box and make sure the IMAPI CD
burning service is set to "automatic" in it's properties and is showing as
"started", any change..?

The inbuilt XP CD burning ability is limited and has not been updated by MS
since 2003, the use of a third party burning app is a definite upgrade..
