CDRW registry problem - XP Home

B

Bob

I have a TEAC W516EC that was working. Don't know what I did to kill it. I
go into the control panel, system, device manager and the cd has the yellow
question mark. I did an uninstall, and restarted the system. It shows new
hardware found. However, I get the following error.
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19).
I have tried the program Registry First Aid without success.
Thanks for any help
Bob

Hi Bob,

Click start/run and type regedit, then click ok. Expand the plus (+) signs
to reach this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Click on this key in the left pane, then on file/export and save it to the
desktop where you can easily find it (you can give it any random name you
want, it is unimportant what you call it). Then, delete *just* this key, do
not touch any of the other class keys. Close the registry editor and restart
the system, the CD drive should be redetected and reinstalled during
startup. If this causes other issues, you can put the original entry back by
double-clicking the exported copy on the desktop and allowing it to merge
with the registry. Otherwise you can delete the saved copy if everything
works correctly.

Hello Rick. I opened the registry, and it will not allow me to delete the
key with the + sign next to it. Should I go into the part of this key and
delete all items under Name, Type and Data? I see under Name, Class Type
REG-SZ and under Data has CDROM.
Right clicking on the reg key and selecting delete com back with cannot
delete key or something like that.

Hi,

Right-click the key, check the permissions on it, you may not have
sufficient ones.

Having trouble understanding the permission thing. Can I just delete the
items shown to the right of the key, than restart the computer to rebuild
the key?

Hi Bob,

You can try it that way if you like.

Thanks Rick. Deleting those files fixed the problem. Hope others have
learned something about working in the registry. 1 file couldn't delete, but
problem still fixed
