CDRW problems

I've found a few answers to problems about CD-RWs under Win XP, but none
seems to reflect these circumstances.

I've been using XP's native CDRW functionality for some time, mainly to
write backups. A family member, using my machine as a source for files
he needed to sort out major problems on his own PC, installed a demo
version of Nero 6 to handle CD writing. Since then (and even after
uninstalling Nero), XP is behaving strangely with regard to the CDRW
drive when viewed in Explorer.

- It will read some, but not all, CD-RWs written before the Nero
installation (behaviour when it can't read one is as described below).
The only suspicion I have about which it will or won't read is that it
will read ones with a lot of relatively small files - it won't read one
with a large backup set. However, I haven't many samples to try out and
this may be a red herring; the CD carrying a lot of small files was
written more recently than the one with the big file, for example, so
there could be other factors.

- It appears to write to a CD-RW, but will not then read the disk: if I
try to select the disk in Explorer after writing it, Explorer freezes
for a long time (long enough to show as 'not responding' in the title
bar), then finally opens an explorer window showing the CDRW with no
files listed, but with a free space measurement which appears to be
about right.

- It appears to re-format a CD-RW, but then behaves exactly as above on
trying to show the 'supposedly now blank' CD-RW - but the 'free space'
measurement does not change to reflect the re-format

Uninstalling Nero made no difference - the CD-RW still behaves as above.

Any suggestions gratefully received! Since it won't currently read my
backup disks, I hope I won't have to risk a re-install!

I an having the same issue. I have also noticed that my CD-RW and DVD-RW drives have disappeared from the pull down menu in the Copy to CD or Device option in Windows Media Player 9.

I have also uninstalled the Demo version of Nero, but continue to have the same erratic performance.

I do not have an answer for you, but I would love to know the solution to this also.
