CDRW DVD Ram Drive Can't read after XP SP2 install

Greetings,

Really hope someone can help here. I searched the newsgroups and the
MS Knowledge base for two days with no success.

History:

After a system crash, I had to re-install Windows XP Home. Everything
was going well and I could read & write to my Matshita UJ-811 DVD RAM
Combo Drive on my Toshiba P25-S509 laptop. I then proceeded to get all
of my XP updates. The last update was SP2. At that time my Ram drive
became unusable. It produced the following symptoms:

Can't read from*any* CD. (Music, Windows CD, OEM software, burned,
etc.)
The Drive shows in My Computer, but if I click on the drive (with or
without Media) the "My Computer" window locks, and has to be closed
with Task Manager.

The drive shows normally in the Device Manager.

When I look at the properties, XP reports that the drive is functioning
properly.

Attempted resolutions:

Attempted to update driver. XP reports that "best driver is being
used"
Repeatedly removed drive from device manager, and rebooted machine so
XP's PNP would recognize drive and re-install. XP did re-install, with
default drivers but did not correct the problem.
Tried the "Autorun solution" from the MS website. No luck.
Searched for an updated driver from the manufacturer but there is not
one available.

I know this is a problem caused by the SP2 because the drive
funnctiioned 2 minutes prior to the update, but at this point I am at a
loss.

This is really a bad situation, because at this point without my drive
functioning I cannot re-install XP if I need to.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

THe frist thing i would look at is to see if the mfg has a flash update for
the drive to fix a sp2 compatability issue ( I had the same problem with a
older Plextor )

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, they did have an update. I downloaded and installed it, but XP
won't recognize the driver. Still uses the default Windows driver.

So no luck there.

Update.

I removed *every* piece of software even remotely associated with CD,
or CD/DVD writing. Removed the drive again, cleaned the registry with
WinClean, took out the High and low filters from the registry as a MS
knowledgebase suggested.

Rebooted more times than I care to count, and XP installed the drive
yet again.

I can see the drive in My Computer, and Device Manager. I can look at
the properties under both, shoot....I can even EJECT by right clicking
the drive and selecting that feature.

But I can't see *any* data from *any* disk I put in the drive.

This has got to be something in the registry. I'm missing a setting
somewhere.

Anyone? At this point I can't re-install XP and start over, because
the CD Drive is the only way to do that.

As before, any help would be greatly appreciated.
