Using XP... whenever I use the cd burner whether it's
just copying to disk or burning, it will be copying away
for about 45 seconds and then all of the sudden the
computer will turn off instantly and reboot. It's not
the cd burner hardware because I bought a different drive
and the same problem happens on both drives. It's not
the ide cable cuz I've switched that out. I have
hardware shutdown disabled in the award bios. My guess
is that it's probably a windows issue. Any thoughts?

You might want to turn off the automatic reboot on crash by going to Control Panel, System, Advanced tab. That might get you a bluescreen instead, with a chance to see what the error is which might provide a clue as to the cause. Without more information, my first guess would be to check out the power supply. Many new computers are seriously underpowered there, and adding a few extra devices can start pushing them over the edge. You might want to take a look at what the watt rating on yours is. You don't say what software you are using to burn with, but that may be worth investigating if you used that with both drives. Perhaps there is an update for it. If still no luck after those steps, you might want to post back to this same thread with more details on your system and the results of the above checks.
