CD writer will not read CD-R's

I have a DVD / CD writer. It will read normal audio CD's and program discs,
but cannot register a CD-R containing JPEG's, MP3's, or if it is simply
blank. When trying to burn data to a CD-R, it comes up with the message
"Please insert disc into drive D:/", however there is a brand new blank CD-R
in the tray. Was working okay until about a week ago. Any help
appreciated.

If it worked correctly in times past but doesn't now, it is most likely
ready for retirement.
