CD/RW Question

I was doing some routine file management on my computer recently and came
across a problem which caused a System Error. Reported it to microsoft and it
came back with Device Driver problem.???
Symptoms: - I was saving files to a cd/rw drive that was fine... Then I went
into explorer to manage the files on the cd/rw drive this was fine until I
tried moving files into a folder... In a flash my computer restarted and
error code reported System error code 00000027, parameter1 baad009c,par2
f5758434,par3 f5758130,par4 f75871bc.
the symbolic name was ER_KRNLCRASH_LOG {this parameter log changers with
each crash}
Not quite sure what all of that means but every time I try to rename a
folder on a cd I crash and now when I save to cd from Works or Word I crash.
yet some programs allow me to backup data to cd ok. I can play cds ok and
create Audio cds ok but when I manage data files I can drag and drop from
hard drive to cds I can launch from cd files ok, but cant rename or
move/manipulate files or folders without a crash/restart. Plus I lose data
and have even corrupted several disks which I now use as coasters.... I use
Roxio easy cd creatorv5 as my burner prog. I have been to roxio site to
update prog but problem still occurs. I have even been to Lite On website and
asked tech dept for help but no reply yet. I have rolled back and even
retored to early dates but prob stil there ...Cd/rw is a LTR-24102B and my
compaq system seems to tell me everything is working fine. tried updating
drivers but none better than whats installed. Not sure what else to try has
anyone any ideas? please be gentle as I am not as competent as some of you
out there appear to be..
Thanks if anyone can help.
Alan

You can not "manage" files on a CD-RW drive unless you have third party
software installed, such as Roxio's Drag-to-Disk or Nero's InCD module. Each
of these come with the respective FULL program of either Roxio Easy Media
Creator or Nero. When either of these are installed you can treat your CD-RW
disk as if it were a plain hard drive (move, copy rename, delete etc.). The
changes are reflected instantaneously.

Thanks Richard, However Roxio Easy cd Creator 5 has the provision for
creating drag and drop files and I have been using this quite happily for the
last couple of years until now. I have been able to treat cds as an
additional hard drive allowing me to move, copy rename and delete. I have
even tried ressetting the computers Bios but to no avail. but thanks for
taking the time to write back anyway. Cheers Alan

I do hope that you have "all" of the updates for ver 5. Otherwise you will
have compatibility problems with Windows XP. The latest/last version update
was to 5.3.5.10

Take the information for what it's worth to you. There were issues with ver
5. Version 6 ironed them all out.

You can update here to the last ver of the Easy CD Creator 5 update..
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/software_updates.jhtml
A firmware update for your CDR drive may allow you to use an updated version
of what you have..To check your current firmware you need to look in system
information, components, cd-rom, PNP device ID (xxxx _________fwver______xxx)
for the drive in question.Your current firmware version should replace
"fwver" in my crude little example above..See the link below for the latest
update and compare to yours..Be warned that firmware updates like bios
updates can go awry so be careful..
http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/40
Or, use the Nero infotool and find your ID string for the drive and firmware
version.
http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/NeroInfotool/neroinfotool.html
You can also search the information for your drive yourself, it's your call..
Hope this info can help...

Hi Jaymon
Thank for all the information. i had already upgraded to ver. 5.3.5.10 after
the first problem but i still have the problem. I contacted Liteon but they
said..Quote" We don`t have any information about this firmware(5QSB). Would
you please
contact its actual vendor?
Because in their system there might be some settings made by them which is
unique and belong to their authority." unquote. Been intouch with compaq /
HP and they have had an technician guide me through loads of proceedures and
updates but stil i have the problem. I have since discovered a work round
which means having a directory especially on my hard drive to manipulate
files and make them "well Managed" then I drag and drop them from the
directory to the cd/rw disk. Not brilliant I know but it works until I can
find a solution just have to remember not to be tempted to rename or move
directly from the cd... Ouch! Been onto the Roxio discussion board and
noticed that quite a few people have had this problem - Roxio still to get in
touch..... Several thread lead to a potential problem with Symantec Virus
software which I have just recently upgraded..... However thanks to both you
and Richard for you help.
Regards.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the info, I have been to the Roxio site and looked on there
discussion board and several people have the same problem. Even in Version 7.
Thought Roxio may have got back to me about this problem but heard nothing as
yet.

Alan,
Upgrade Roxio as Richard mention to the latest ver and your problems should
disappear or upgrade to a DVD/CD-RW combo drive with Roxio or Nero bundled
with the drive..End of year closeout sales may make upgrading affordable,
it's your call..
Enjoy all the approaching holidays..

Thanks Jaymon for taking the time to write and help. I think I will upgrade
both the Roxio and make my Cd drive a Dvd/Cdrw drive. A local company who are
"stamping down prices", you know the one have a Lite on dvd/rw for about £50
so may treat myself.
Thanks for all the help
Alan.

Dear all, after updating mr cd/rw drive and updating roxio product to EMC7.5
supersonic... I still had the problem of crashing when writing to cd's.
However, solution has now been found for anyone else who has this problem, (i
cannot take credit for this solution as it came to me by a friend in the same
boat but it WORKS)
Apparently My antivirus software reads my read/write process and performs an
immediate shutdown thinking it is an attack or something (probably a timing
issue/conflict) however, once reconfigured A.V. Software to ignore the drive
I am working on (temporarily) I can use packet writing once again so my files
can be neatly managed yet again. i have informed the software owners of
issues and hope to get a reply soon...
Thanks
Alan. hope this post helps anyone else in same boat as myself.
