Lori

I have windows xp with a factory intalled Sony cd-rw
drive. I have only had this computer about six months.
Used the drive when I first got computer haven't for
months now. anyways went to make up backup disks and the
drive is not working. There is power to the drawer, when
I insert the disc it reads for a sec and then the power
light blinks rapidly. I have used device manager says it
is working properly. I have used trouble shooting. I
have removed and reinstalled the driver. I have all the
required updates. I haven't opened up it up yet to check
cables.....a little leary about that. But is that my
next option?...thanks a bunch

No the next option is to tell us exactly what you want to do.

Are you using third party software to burn your data to disk or the built in
XP software?

Are you trying to create a backup file with NTBackup... in which case you
MUST save the backup file to the hard drive first and THEN burn that file to
the CDR or CDRW. Neither MSBackup nor NTBackup will write direct to a CD or
DVD disk.

Have you read through Alex Nichol's article at

I have same problems with Sony CD writer that came with HP Pavilion. I used
different recording software that came with the PC (it seems to freeze
after it suppossedly finishes the burn or when I try to read the supposedly
successful burn.

I spent more than one hour with "HP instant support" by email following
their instructions. It seems to be al the steps that you already took.

I used the cd writer in the past to burn CD's. It worked fine in the
beginning.

How do turn auto play off?

Thanks for the web link Cari -

I too am experiencing similiar problems as Lori. I never
used third party software, always windows media player to
burn and play. Woiked fine for a while but someone did
something obviously as it don't anymore. I too have no
error messages, device manager looks good, everything says
it's ok. For instance, my cd-rw will not recognize a store
bought CD, none. The drive light flickers like it is
playing but WMP does not open(it's set to) it or when
double clicking the device in My Computer, it hourglasses
for a bit then declares 'no disc in device'. However, if i
insert a blank CD-R in the same device, it sees it. I can
burn to it but then it won't play. It plays fine at work.

Hi,

I have just logged on to find out the same myself.
Exactly same problem except LG CD RW. Working fine for some months then will
not read or write but all other system indicators says it's fine. I have has
no problem with CDR drives on other machines on my home network!!
If many people are having this problem has it anything to do with XP updates
or patches? How many of you update regulalally?

All I am trying to do is USE my drive. It will not even
read cd's. I wanted to make the compaq recovery discs
you are suppose to make when you purchase the computer
and cannot even do that. I was going to use the
installed cd burning software..."record now". I wasn't
trying to burn music or make copies of other cd's or
anything just trying to use the drive period.
