New system with WinXP media edition OS. HP DVD Writer 704B (burns DVD &
CDs) . Sonic DigitialMedia + V7 (CD & DVD software, lite version I suspect)
installed. Would like to be able to work with CDs from Windows Explorer or
other software programs just like you would with a floppy disk. Is there a
way to do this without fooling with XP's process of writing to a temporary
folder ect.

Thanks

Buy packet writing software. It's typically bundled in recording suites from Nero (which calls it InCD) or Roxio (which calls it Drag-to-Disc.) Be careful - packet writing is unreliable unless you're reading back on the same computer that did the writing.

If you hav Sonic Record Now, as i do in this HpMce, you can drag drop, or
browse with the sonic software to select objects that you would like to save
to CD-RW or DVD-RW. You can also create/save image to CD that is bootable
