CD ROM's not working!!!

After our IT person here at work installed Office 2007, our CD ROM's stopped
working. They won't read any type of CD (data or music). There are 2
different ones that show up in the device manager (TSST corp DVD-ROM TS-H353B
and YBEZI OH2B4DE7GTM7 SCSI CdRom Device) and both say they are working
properly. I have looked everywhere to find a fix for this. I read about the
upper and lower filters, but couldn't find any showing up. I have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling, enabling just one and then the other, and
nothing seems to work. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
Our IT person says there's nothing he can do.

You read about upper/lower filters - but did you remove them?

There weren't any filters listed in my directory.

Just to make sure we are clear - you did not find them listed as an entry in
your system registry?
(Those are keys/sub-keys - not directories in the registry.)

You can review:

(Run the fix it utility anyway.)

And/or:

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Windows Explorer.'

Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)


In any case - they are seen in the BIOS?
Are they seen in Safe Mode?
Do you have a BartPE or UBCD you could boot from - if so - are they seen
there?

Now this is a very stupid question!! IT people are like you with no
brains! How are they suppose to know about accountancy or tax software
patches? It makes sense to give ADMIN rights (only for computers they
use) to users of those software packages to install any new patches and
updates issued by accountancy software companies or tax software companies.

No wonder IT people like SS are considered nutters!!
