I checked my system error log, which indicated that my cd-
rom has a "bad block". What does this mean, and can
anything be done to fix it?

I means that the CD Drive could not read a portion of the data from
the CD in the drive. I happens when discs are covered with scratches
and finger marks. In most cases this error can be ignored.
