cd-rom

I just built a new computer. Loaded Windows 2000 Pro on
it. I needed to put my Yahoo DSL software on it so I
could get internet. When I loaded the cd it went ok.
Till a point where the program just seemed to be running
but not going anywhere. I ended the instal process so I
could just start all over. I attempted to put the dsl
yahoo cd in again. This time when I loaded it, after a
few seconds the computer spit it back out at me. I
thought I might have a cd-rom error so I put a completly
different cd in. It spit this back at me too. It would
even register the windows 2000 cd I had installed.
Everytime I put in a cd, it thinks for a sec then it pops
right back out. I have no clue what to do. any
suggestions would be nice.

Buy a book. :)

Seriously: Anyone who wants to mess around with computers _needs_ a book -
several, in fact. The books may sit on the shelf for months, but when you
need 'em, you need 'em.

As to your problem: my guess is that a Repair In Place will probably fix this
for you. Put the W2K CD in the drive, reboot, and press F8 when that option
appears (at the bottom of the screen - you know, when those little white
stripes are converted into a solid bar.) It looks like the Registry is
messed up, and Repair will usually fix it, or else you may have to use
regedit to fix it manually. IOW, there's a lot more to it, so _get a book_.
