CD Rom works, but will NOT read anything

Okay, this has been going on for a few weeks now and it's driving me and my
mother crazy. We have a MDG computer that we're paying for. We've had it
since 2005. Everything has been great, no serious problems, well nothing I
couldn't fix. But there's this one thing; our CD Rom will stop working at
random times. It'll open, and close no problem, but will not read the CD we
put in. Not even a cleaning CD!

I have tried updating the driver, but there's nothing to update. It's in the
Device Manager so the comuter knows it there, so what else can I do? I've
aready tried goong into the registry files (I think) And getting rid of the
Uppercase and Lowercase files, without sucess.

Please help, before I have to run outside and scream.

Is the front of the CDROM drive a bright yellow colour?

If so, then you can be certain that you have a lemon. Unfortunately, these
are made and distributed to consumers from time to time. Try replacing the
drive. (in most places, it's about a $30 solution)

By the way, if you're still "paying for" it, is it possible that you have a
service contract on the machine? If so, then let the technician earn his
salary...

If you're on your own, then one thing you might check is the power plug. I
had one of them work its way out one time. I suspect that the constant
vibration of opening and closing, spinning up/down caused the improperly
seated plug to work its way out over time. Not sure, but I pushed it back in
and never had a problem after that. Beyond that, if you've checked out the
driver situation and everything's OK, then it sounds mechanical to me.
