cd-rom use causes restart

whenever my dvd or cd-rw drive is in use for more than
about a minute the whole machine restarts itself, i've
tried looking in power management and have set most of
the settings there to never and still it happens. i have
all the current available updates/service packs etc.
installed and still the problem occurs. i'm running xp
pro and have full admin privelages. any helpful
suggestions would be most appreciated.
