cd rom & rw drives not working

can someone assist me with finding out how to get my cd
rom & cd rw drives working again? the drives show as
enabled & working properly but when i put a cd in the
drives it shows the data when i explore the drive but if
i try to click on any of the files xp pro is telling me
that the cd is not in the drive. i've tried reinstalling
the drivers & upgraded to chipset drivers (as i upgraded
from 98se to xp) and nothing is working. please help.
