CD-ROM Message - Not Accessible & Incorrect function

Need help in understanding why I can't copy any files to my CD-ROM when using
a CD-R disk (new or partially filled disk). The message I get is: " E:\ is
not accessible. Incorrect function."

Thanks for any help offered.

Make/model of the CD drive in question?
Application using to write to the CD?
Tried different brands of media?
Is this a new issue?

I'm using a Sony CD-RWCRX320EE CD drive.
I'm using MS XP copy application.
I have tried both TDK and Memorex CD-R disks and get the same message.
I have not used this copy task to my CD drive in the past because I have an
external hard drive used for storage and back-up. But, I just discovered
this problem when I tried to copy a program to a CD for a friend. The CD-ROM
drive has worked fine for laoding & installing new software programs or
playing music CD's.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. As it turns out I had a registry
problem. I did the edit and it worked great!

Oops, I thought I had my problem completely fixed but when I attempted to
copy the files to the CD using the CD writing Wizard I'm getting the message
that there's no disc in the CD drive. I tried several different CD-R's but
still get the same message. What am I doing wrong?
