CD ROM install <--Pls help

I just installed an old Toshiba (5602b) CD ROM. It has its own IDE
cable and is connected to the sound card. I'm using Windows 98SE.
The Device Manager says "This device is working properly."

If I place a software CD into it and click Explore, I get the essage
"E:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready."

If I place a music CD into it, the CD plays at a fast rate, sounding
like chipmonks.

It seems like my IDE may not be working. I tried another cable, but
have the same result. I checked out the Phoenix BIOS settings.

Can anyone give me a few troubleshooting tips?

Thanks!

If you are sure it's an ide device...
you could try connecting ti to one of your ide channels rather than
through the sound card.
if it still does not work right...just forget it

It is connected to the primary IDE connector on the motherboard. In
fact, it's the only IDE device in this system. All the other devices
are on a scuzzy chain. Maybe the CD ROM is bad. All I want is to get
the network stuff working and ethernet card installed, but Windows
keeps asking to insert the frickin Win8SE CD!

Sounds like a duff drive to me. New IDE ones can be picked up for less than
8UKP. (www.scan.co.uk) or stick with SCSI for 11UKP.

When you do get a working CD drive in there copy the CAB files from the
Win98 CD to a directory on your hard disk and whenever Windows asks for the
disk just point it to the directory with the CAB files in, saves having to
find the disk each time. They only take up a small amount of space.

If it is a prebuilt PC many companies used to copy the CAB files into
c:\windows\options\cabs

Or....Try going to the website of the network card maker and seeing if there
is an option to download the drivers onto a floppy or three.
