Help: Booting And Installing From DVD Drive

S

Searcher7

I have an HP Pavilion 7955 that didn't have a hard drive, so I put in
a 164G Serial-ATA Hitachi Deskstar(HDT722516DLA380). There is a light
blue connector that has a small PCB plugged into it that allows the
use of a SATA drive with the motherboard. And the drive is the only
one on it's cable.

I want to try to install XP from a DVD. But the screen that shows the
boot order is as follows:

Boot Device Priority
--------------------
CD-ROM Drive
+Removable Drives
+Hard Drive
Network Boot

Though the DVD drive is found by the BIOS, it doesn't show at all in
that Boot Priority screen.

Is there a way to get the DVD-ROM drive into this list?

The CD-ROM and DVD-Rom are on a single cable with it terminating at
the CD-ROM.

Thanks.

I can envision the color light blue but I can't see where "there"
is.

Burn it to a CD.

Remove one of the optical drives and install from a CD.

Good luck.

Did you try to boot yet? The CD-ROM setting is likely to
work, booting from the DVD. If it does not, check the drive
jumpers. If all else fails, unplug the SATA adapter board
and see if it then boots from the DVD... not that you could
install like this but just to see if it then works.

The CD-ROM and DVD-Rom are on a single cable with it terminating at
the CD-ROM.

If the bios lacks the ability to boot from DVD-ROM in this
configuration, either swap the position of the drives or
temporarily unplug the CD-ROM and plug the end of the data
cable into the DVD-ROM, rejumpering to Master or Cable
Select if previously jumpered to slave. Often OEMs use
Cable Select, if jumpered to master/slave you might try
cable select and leave them like that if it works so you
don't have to fiddle with jumpers anymore.

There may actually not be a listing for the letters "DVD" but an earlier
usage of CD-ROM in the bios. To insure that you're seeing the DVD-ROM
temporarily disconnect the CD-ROM from the cable and see if the DVD-ROM
still shows up. You can always add the CD-ROM drive back in after
installation. If it does as a CD-ROM then you've done the job right. Also,
make sure these drives are jumpered appropriately as master and slave if
they are on the same cable. Some DVD and CD-ROM drives are particular to
having themselves set as 'master' and don't like being a slave. No pun
intended.

If you get this far and can boot to XP then you may also be thoughtful
that XP may need you to use a SATA driver to actually see your SATA drive,
that would be copied from a floppy disk, which would depend on the way the
motherboard translates SATA drves as IDE drives for the OS. If the drive
gets seen by XP for installation none of that would be necessary.

I can't figure out how to get the DVD and CD out of the case to check
it or get to and change the jumpers. HP obvious made this difficult
for a reason. It seems like the onlyway is to slide the DVD and CD
forward, but I see no way to get the face of the case off first. I
don't think I broke them, but I might have moved the swing down doors
of the DVD and CD out of alignment.(I'm assuming there is no online
how-to video that one can access).

Anyway, this is one of two systems I've had for years, but have never
used because everytime I dig tehm out to attempt to get them up and
running I run into a roadblock. So I put them away,a nd then months
later I dig them out again and try to re-learn what little I know and
pick up where I left off. We first corresponded on this system a while
ago.(See "SATA Controller Recommendation?" in "alt.comp.hardware").

I've spent most of Thankgiving trying to get this working and I'm
close to putting it back into hibernation.

Thanks.

I've stumbled on how to get the DVD-ROM and CD-ROM out. But I can't
find anywhere online the info regarding the jumper specifics.

The drives are as follows:

CD = CR-4848TE
DVD = SD-616

Thanks.

I've stumbled on how to get the DVD-ROM and CD-ROM out.

I have a system or two similar to this, maybe, I'll look
around and see what I have. Generally there is either an
inset plastic front panel that pops off or swivels up, or
the entire front plastic bezel is removed then the whole
drive rack slides out the front... if the whole bezel comes
off you may need to get inside the system via the side panel
and depress some plastic tabs that latch through holes in
the front metal wall of the case.

But I can't
find anywhere online the info regarding the jumper specifics.

The jumper settings are usually molded into the plastic on
the back of the drive, or at least on the drive label if not
there.

The drives are as follows:

CD = CR-4848TE
DVD = SD-616

Thanks.

If all else fails you could just make a CDR instead? I'm
just suggesting it might be easier to make than to take
system apart and fiddle with the drives. Also, it is
possible you can just make a bootable CDR including DOS
drivers, then navigate in DOS to the DVD drive at command
prompt and start winxp setup by running /I386/Winnt.exe

An update - I looked at a similar case here and the way to
get the bay out is by flipping up the USB/port flap at the
bottom then pressing upwards and outwards on each side of
the bottom of the plastic insert which will free it from the
bottom tabs. Next at the top of the entire plastic insert
(top of case), that insert is pulled forward. At that point
it should come completely off if wiggled around a little and
the slide out drive bay is exposed.

The following is a picture of the typical jumper positions
and markings on an optical drive:

http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/data/articles/2004/1215/08-optical-jumper.jpg

These jumper-pin positions are pretty standard and I will
usually just put the jumper in that position without trying
to read it first... by using curved forceps I can usually
get the jumper moved without pulling the whole drive out, so
if you have forceps or needle-nose pliers/etc, you too might
be able to check then change jumpers as needed, and/or
unplug the CD drive and have only the DVD plugged into the
end of the cable without having to pull the whole drive bay
out.

OK, I did stumble on how to get the DVD and CD drives out.(Those
flimsy swing-down bay doors had come off and were hell getting back
into position).

The DVD-ROM didn't have the the pin position info on the case, but
thankfully the CD-ROM did. So I just took a chance and assumed they
were the same.(THey were both on "Cable Select").

I switched them around and made the DVD-ROM the "Master" and the CD-
ROM the "slave", but that did not work, so I completely disconnected
the CD-ROM and it worked. The Windows XP set-up started. After the
couple hour installation(which had it's own set of road-blocks) I re-
connected the CD-ROM(as the slave) and at the moment everything seems
to be working.(Including the little adaptor that lets the SATA drive
work on this IDE motherboard).

Thanks a lot.
