Your first step should be to press the Pause button during
the boot process so that you can see on the screen if the
drive is being recognised by the BIOS. Press the Enter key
to continue, and Pause again if you froze the display too soon.

Hi Dylan - See here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];270008 It may not
sound like it applies but take the steps outlined there to delete the Upper
and Lower Filters.

(Dylan, I'm assuming you know how to download a file from an Internet
address and then 'unzip' it. If not, then ask someone - your parents
perhaps - for a little assistance in order to do the following which is the
approach I would recommend for you in this case. You probably shouldn't be
messing around with the Registry directly.)

You can also use this reg file to handle these deletes (it takes care of
deleting some other things which can cause problems as well):
http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip This is
pretty much the "standard" fix for this type of issue. Backup first so that
you can recover if there are problems (there aren't usually, BTW).

It's recommended by Compaq/HP that you run FilterFixer also when this occurs
to recreate the correct entries, here:

Hi Dylan - I think that the easiest thing for you to do in this case would
be to take a "Resore Point" before you do the Registry update. Do the
following:

1. Start|All Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Restore.

2. Select "Create a restore point", then click Next.

3. In 'Restore Point Description' put some description such as "Prior to CD
Reg Fix", then click 'Create'. This will back up your Registry (and some
other things also), and allow you to recover if you should have any problems
(which is very unlikely with this fix, so don't worry about it too much.)

4. Now you can double click on the 'cdgone.reg' file you downloaded and
unzipped from the link I gave you before
(http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip) and just answer 'Yes' when it
asks you if it's OK to proceed.

5. When it's finished doing the Registry update, reboot your computer and
see if your CD drive is now showing and operating correctly.

If the above isn't clear or you have any problem, then post back and I'll
try to be more explicit.

Please post back here when you've done this and tell us how you've gotten
on, and we'll take the next step to install the FilterFixer program. :)
